Far from the Maddening Crowd: Venice’s backyard

Castello is the largest sestiere of Venice and it developed around the Arsenale, the State’s shipyard, upon which Venice built its fortune and destiny. This itinerary will lead you through historic working class quarters that hide jewels of religious architecture, such as the churches of San Francesco della Vigna and San Pietro di Castello. You will also get a glimpse of the everyday life of local Venetians.

Additional costs: Entrance to the church of San Pietro (€ 3).
Notes: The Arsenale is partially hosting offices of the Italian Navy and partially serving as a venue for the international contemporary art/architecture exhibition Biennale di Venezia. Entrance to the military spaces is forbidden; entrance to the exhibition spaces takes place only from June to November and requires a ticket.
